The core operating principle of the gantry shear can be summarized as a coordinated process involving hydraulic drive, gantry frame support, and a shearing action achieved by the closing of the blades. The equipment utilizes a hydraulic transmission system to drive the vertical movement of the shear arm; the material feeding system first transports the scrap steel to the shearing zone and positions it. Subsequently, the hydraulic system drives the movable crossbeam to move the upper blade downward, closing it against the fixed lower blade to sever the scrap steel through shearing force.

The essence of the shearing process lies in applying concentrated shear stress to the scrap steel via the blades; when this stress exceeds the material's shear strength, the scrap steel separates along the shear plane. Modern gantry shears often integrate auxiliary functions-such as hold-down devices, automatic feeding and discharge systems, and safety control logic-to enhance both efficiency and safety.

For large scrap pieces that cannot be fed directly into the cutting zone, side-compression cylinders located on both sides of the feed box compress and reduce the material's size, after which a conveyor platform transports it to the blades for cutting.
